AS1554

So what does it mean to specify AS1554

weld1In the current business environment principals/contractors are demanding a higher level of confidence in manufacturers/sub-contractors. These service provider needs to demonstrate a high level of confidence in their products, evidence of this competence can be produced by weld testing.

Australian and International Construction Standards detail how welding should be carried out, and although AS1554 is not mandatory, process control must be demonstrated when manufacturing a component. AS1554 is the best way to do this, How could you demonstrate if your processes and personnel are controlled? If a component ever fails, welding procedure and operator qualification testing in accordance with these standards is cheap insurance in the face of litigation.

So what does it mean, ‘all welding to AS1554’, it means qualification testing, set acceptance criteria, set manufacturing requirements. If done correctly, it is easy to comply with AS1554 and can be a marketing tool for your organization, if welding is done incorrectly and does not meet the acceptance criteria it can be very expensive to rectify and damaging to your reputation.

Often manufacturers deal with this at the time of winning the contract or worse still when the contract has started and the client requests to see the welding procedures.
